anki on GitHub
The upstream repository for Anki is the upstream repository. That is where Releases, issues, wiki pages, and LICENSE live. Bookmark the org spelling carefully; lookalike names appear in search ads.
Deck Quill uses that repo as the source of truth for filenames and licence class. Package managers are checked against winget-pkgs and Homebrew, then cross-checked against the same Releases tag.
Releases tab
Open Releases and filter to non-prerelease tags prefixed release-. The current stable line publishes Windows setup executables, macOS dmgs, Linux tar.zsts, source archives, and detached .asc signatures. Prefer the default x64 setup for Windows strangers.
Each release notes page lists changes for that version. Read the notes when you jump a major line. Asset chooser: releases.
Homepage download tables on anki.org usually point at the same project. When the two disagree, trust the GitHub asset name you can see on the tag.
Licence and security files
LICENSE explains that the desktop project ships under AGPL-3.0-or-later, with portions noted under other licenses in LICENSE. Link: LICENSE.
Security contacts sit under the repository Security tab. Report vulnerabilities through that channel instead of public issues when the problem is sensitive. Safety guide: is it safe.
The wiki holds user-facing topics such as setup tips and search plugins. Treat wiki pages as community docs; still verify installer names on Releases.
What the repo is not
GitHub is not a substitute for your local firewall or VPN choices. The client speaks the flashcard protocol; content legality and network policy stay your responsibility. The repo also is not a store listing with in-app purchases.
Forks and mirrors may republish builds. Prefer the upstream org for binaries unless your organisation pins an internal mirror on purpose. Download-safe habits: download safely.
Stars and activity
Star counts and recent pushes appear on the home stats strip from a live fetch. They help you see that the project is active. They are not a safety certificate by themselves. Always match filenames and signatures when your threat model requires it.
Issues and pull requests show ongoing work. Skimming recent issues can reveal install gotchas on new OS versions before you image a lab.
How this guide links back
Every cluster page links up to the anki home. Install guides for Windows, macOS, and Linux quote the same repo doors. Comparison pages name RemNote and Quizlet without sending you to another factory host.
When you file an internal ticket, paste the repo URL, the tag name, and the exact asset filename. That trio beats a vague “download anki” note every time.
Operational detail for shared desks
Shared desks drift when every volunteer picks a different mirror. Print the GitHub Releases URL, the winget id Anki.Anki, and the Homebrew cask anki on the same lab card. After each reimage, prove one card or deck add before you hand the machine back.
Travel laptops should carry the filename you installed and the update door you trust.
Prefer returning to the documented door even when search ads shout louder than the official project name.
Helpdesk tickets move faster when they include the OS build, the asset name or package id, and whether a VPN changed during the incident.
Vague deck-is-broken notes waste mornings. Ask for a screenshot of the Decks list and the Downloads path in Options.
Classroom images should freeze only after a reboot test. Antivirus first scans and login scripts hide problems that a same-session demo misses. Keep a second spaced repetition flashcard program only if your policy truly needs it.
When you retire a machine, uninstall Anki and remove extra media folders that still hold private packs. Document retention rules separately from the install guide.

Quiet checklist for the next image
- Pin the Releases URL and package ids on the lab card.
- Prove one card or deck add after every reimage.
- Keep adware mirrors off the bookmark bar.
- Record whether winget, brew, or a manual asset was used.
- Reboot once before you call the desk ready.
- Trainers rehearse the prove step on a small trusted deck.
- Helpdesks ask for the filename and the Downloads path before they escalate.
- Travel kits carry the same notes on paper when Store access is flaky.
When a machine retires, uninstall Anki and clear media folders that still hold private packs according to your retention rules. Keep signature verification optional for threat models that require it, using the detached asc files on the same tag.
Prefer the newest non-prerelease release tag that publishes the Windows x64 setup. Beta lines stay out of golden images.
